Cowboys Fight to Retain Reece Robson Amid Roosters’ Interest
Cowboys coach Todd Payten has revealed the club is pulling out all the stops to retain star player Reece Robson, following reports that the Roosters are targeting the NSW representative. The Roosters, led by coach Trent Robinson, are reportedly eyeing Robson as a replacement for Brandon Smith, who is sidelined with an ACL injury and whose future at the club is uncertain despite his expressed desire to stay.
Robson, who had an outstanding 2024 season, playing all three State of Origin games for NSW and representing the Kangaroos in the Pacific Championships, is off-contract in 2026 but free to negotiate with other clubs. His stellar form and NSW roots make a move back to Sydney, potentially to the Roosters, a tempting prospect.
Payten confirmed the Cowboys have made retaining Robson a priority. “He’s a quality player who plays big minutes and has been consistent for the past two to three years,” said Payten. “We’ve put forward our best offer, and now it’s up to him to decide.”
Speculation about a potential player swap involving Smith heading to the Cowboys and Robson to the Roosters has been dismissed by Smith, who made it clear he has no interest in leaving Sydney or joining the Cowboys. “There’s no way I’m going back to Queensland,” Smith stated on his podcast.
Despite the Roosters’ interest, Payten remains hopeful the Cowboys can secure Robson on a long-term deal, ensuring the club keeps one of its key assets for years to come.
