As conference championship games unfold, the push for teams to secure spots in the 12-team College Football Playoff intensifies. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey made a bold case for the league’s dominance, asserting that Alabama’s strength of schedule surpasses any ACC program.
Appearing on ESPN’s College GameDay, Sankey emphasized the SEC’s superiority:
> “The SEC is the strongest league in college football, and it needs to be respected for that.”
Highlighting the principles of CFP selection, Sankey noted that strength of schedule is paramount. He argued that the SEC’s 8-3 record against ACC teams this season and Alabama’s grueling schedule justify the Crimson Tide’s playoff contention.
Alabama faced five preseason Top 25 opponents, including Georgia, Missouri, and LSU, and secured three wins against currently ranked teams. With a resume that includes competitive performances and a quality loss to No. 7 Tennessee, Alabama remains a compelling at-large candidate.
The Tide’s fate now hinges on SMU’s performance in the ACC Championship Game. Should SMU defeat Clemson, Alabama could clinch the No. 11 seed in the playoff.
